DINNER WALK OF FAME

Beatrix

3 historical women who walk between the courses from one restaurant to the other. Princess Beatrix starts at Dam Square. She tells about the Royal Palace and walks to the starter. Then Rembrandt’s wife brings the group in his footsteps to the main course. She offers the group a book about her and Rembrandt in Amsterdam. Then brothel owner Theresa walks through the Red Light District to a place for dessert where she offers 3 Dutch liquors.

SHIPS DINNER ALL ABOARD

Imagine, you enter the bar of Giertje in 1610. She serves cold beer, cheese and ‘bitterballen’. After a short story about Amsterdam, the group is brought to the ships room to “sail off to Asia”. Each sailor get a jacket and a Dutch gin against sea sickness. A ships dinner is served. Between the courses several women appear; a poor sailor’s wife, a rich merchant’s wife and a brothel owner looking for sailors in the harbor. Dessert comes with Dutch liquors to taste.

JORDAAN DINNER WALK

JORDAAN

Jannie has lived in the Jordaan all her life. Dressed in a tiger print outfit she shares her stories. The walk starts with a drink and a Dutch ‘bitterbal’ in a typical Dutch ‘brown café’. Then Jannie walks with the group through the small streets to the starter, main course and dessert. There she shares 3 Dutch liquors together with the stories about love and seduction.

ZAANDAM

Zaandam, the city where Claude Monet and Peter the Great lived. In the Golden Age, hundreds of mills processed wood here for the shipbuilding and paper industries. Discover Zaandam and its restaurants on our Dinner Walk of 3 hours, with Camille, the wife of Claude Monet, the carpenters’ wife where Peter the Great stayed and the Mayor’s wife of Westzaan, wearing a typical Zaan costume.

HAARLEM

The capital of the province of North Holland, located on the river Spaarne, giving it its nickname, Spaarne city. Discover culinary Haarlem together with actor guide Ingrid Marsman. Her special dinner walks are informative and entertaining. She plays 3 historical women (Kenau, Liesbeth -the wife of Frans Hans- and Malle Babbe). They show the city through their eyes and walk with you to 3 different locations for a 3-course dinner.

THE HAGUE

The Hague is the governmental city of the country. It is also where King Willem Alexander lives. Discover culinary The Hague together with actor guide Ingrid Marsman. Her special dinner walks are informative and entertaining. She plays 3 historical women :(princess Beatrix,  Maria van Berckel and Aleida van Poelgeest) who walk with you to 3 different locations for a 3-course dinner.

UTRECHT

Utrecht is located in the heart of the Netherlands, and an important religious centre with many beautifull churches. Discover culinary Utrecht together with actor guide Ingrid Marsman. Her special dinner walks are informative and entertaining. She plays 3 historical women (sister Bertken, Trijn van de Leemput and a brothel owner of the 17th century) who show the city through their eyes and walks with you to 3 different locations for a 3-course dinner. 

HOORN

Hoorn was founded in 716 and became a major harbor town. During Holland’s Golden Age, Hoorn was an important home base for the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Discover culinary Hoorn with three women from former times, and dinner in three different restaurants. Enjoy!

EDAM / VOLENDAM

Edam is a picturesque village, famous for its cheese. Discover Edam with Trijntje Keever, born in Edam in April 1616. With 2.54 meters she was possibly the tallest woman to have ever lived. In Voledam Hille Butter takes over. Volendam is a former fisher village, well-known for its lovely harbor and the traditional clothing. Hille was a Dutch model and, according to artists in her time, the best model of the village. During the tour, a three course dinner is planned in different restaurants.

Private Village Walk

Your group can enjoy a theatrical Village Walk at the Zaanse Schans, performed by Ingrid Marsman, a local resident, guide and actress. Join Kaatje Slagter a Mayor’s wife from 1850 on her Private Village Walk. She knows everything about her neighborhood and gladly shares the latest gossip with you. Dressed in her favorite Zaans costume, she lets you relive times gone by.

Mayor’s Mansion visit

The Mayor’s Mansion was built in 1734 by local nobleman Jan Bruygom. Later it became the home of Westzaan Mayor Teunis Slagter. His wife Kaatje Slagter, dressed in a regional costume, invites you inside and shows a short documentary of the history of the Zaan region, while you are offered tea and lemonade.

The visit takes around 20 minutes and can be booked between 10 am and 5 pm.

In touch with the Dutch

To make your program more entertaining, your group can meet guide actors during the walk, representing famous historical persons who once lived here: Claude Monet , Tsar Peter the Great, a whale hunter, a miller and a Spanish soldier. They talk about their lives in the Zaan region.

09.00 – 09.30    Transfer Amsterdam – Zaanse Schans

09.30 – 11.30   1) Village Walk with Kaatje Slagter

Meet Mayor’s wife Kaatje Slagter at the bus parking. She brings you back to 1850, to the time that she lived here. Her walking tour includes a visit to the wooden shoe factory, first grocery store of Albert Heijn, the cheese farm and windmill De Huisman. For large groups we arrange several local actor guides in costume. The walking tour ends at the Mayor’s Mansion, Kaatjes own house.

Optional A): Meet other famous historical figures

During the Village Walk, actors in costume let history come to life. They share their stories, linked with the Zaan region when the group(s) pass by.

Optional B) Join a 45-minute windmill cruise and make wonderfull windmill pictures from the water.

11.30 – 12.00    2)   Private visit to the Mayor’s Mansion

The mayor’s wife welcomes you inside her Mayor’s Mansion and shows you around. She shows an interesting documentary about the history of the Mayor’s Mansion and the Zaan region.The house was built in 1734. In 1850 it belonged to Teunis Slagter, Mayor of Westzaan. In 1963 the Mayor’s Mansion was transported from Westzaan to the Zaanse Schans. In 2012 it was officially opened by Princess Beatrix and in 2017 the house was chosen as the location for the movie ‘Mata Hari, The Naked Spy.

We organise lunches at the Dutch pancake bakery De Kraai, and lunches/dinners at restaurant Hoop op d’Swarte Walvis or Italian restaurant Il Mulino. If you chose the mustard soup in the Mayor’s Mansion, it can be served as a starter, with the main course/desert served in one of the restaurants.

VILLAGE WALK
Discover the Zaanse Schans village with ‘Kaatje Slagter’, the mayor’s wife from 1850. Dressed in a regional costume, she brings you back to her time. With visits to an old grocery and the wooden shoe workshop. At the end of the walk, she invites you inside her house (the Mayor’s Mansion) for a special Dutch tea party in her cozy dining room. 

WINDMILL CRUISE
Kaatje says farewell and you can hop on board Windmill Cruises to enjoy a boat ride on the Zaan river. Listen to the heroic windmill stories and make the best windmill photos from the waterside ! 

WINDMILL VISITS
The boat ends at wood saw mill ‘Het Jonge Schaap’ (the young sheep) for a visit. With your windmill pass, you can also visit the other industrial windmills, open to the public. They each have their own story, and they are proudly standing along the dyke.

FREE TIME
In your free time you can enjoy lunch at one of the local restaurants (not included), visit the cheese farm, bakery museum, CacaoLab, antique shop and pewter foundry (free of charge) or choose for a paid visit to the Zaan Museum, weaver’s house and Clock museum.

You can reach the Zaanse Schans by car, bus or train or choose our transportation by minivan that you can book extra.
11.30 – 12.00 Transfer from Amsterdam museum square to the Zaanse Schans where the Village Walk starts.
17.00 – 17.30 Return to Amsterdam, Central Station area.

We start at the Museum square, so you can take the opportunity to visit the Rijks museum, van Gogh museum or Coster Diamonds factory in the early morning (all open as of 9.00 am).

DAILY WALKING

Join Kaatje Slagter, a Mayor’s wife from 1850, on her Daily Village Walk.

This theatrical walk brings you back in time! Besides visits to an old grocery and a mill,  the tour includes a visit to the Mayor’s Mansion, Kaatje’s private home. She invites you
to a Dutch tea party and proudly gives a tour of the house. The tour is in English.

You can choose the Daily Village Walk only, and travel to the Zaanse Schans by yourself. You can add transportation by minivan from Amsterdam or book the exclusive VIP tour with the Daily Village Walk, a lovely boat ride on the Zaan river and all mills included. The VIP tour can be booked with or without transportation.
